Has Facebook Colonized Asia?

Previously, I spoke about Facebook superseding Friendster in Asia, or more precisely Southeast Asia. However, Facebook is facing bigger challenges to beat or even catch up with its competitors in other parts of Asia, especially China, Japan and South Korea.

Social Networks Around the World

The map above is an interesting visualization by Vincenzo Cosenza built using Alexa and Google Trends for Website traffic data in June 2009.

It's not that all green (Facebook's territory) over Asia, right? This is due to the fact that bigger countries (hence bigger population) are not yet conquered by Facebook. Even though Asia is a tricky market for Facebook, still 17 countries have been colonized, far in front of other players.

Facebook: Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United Arab Emirates.

Odnoklassniki: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan.

Maktoob: Oman, Syria, Yemen.

Hi5: Mongolia, Thailand.

V Kontakte: Kazakhstan, Russia.

Cyworld: South Korea

Friendster: Philippines

Mixi: Japan

QQ: China

Wretch: Taiwan

Zing: Vietnam
