Yes, according to State of the Mobile Web, Oct 2008 report by Opera, Malaysia has the highest mobile internet user growth in Southeast Asia. Although the usage is measured solely on Opera Mini, it is still an useful benchmark on mobile internet adoption and trend in this region.

Opera Mini has only 0.06% market share compared to both desktop and mobile browsers, but nevertheless it has big market share in mobile browsers. This is because it is being shipped on major mobile manufacturers and available to various mobile operating system (excluding iPhone OS), making it the alternative browser of choice for mobile users.

I don't think there is any reason to be doubtful as we can see people around us using internet on mobiles. So much so that many large companies in malysia are bringing internet phone service or voip service (on iphones and other voip compatible mobiles sets) in place of the ordinary mobile phones service or landline phones.

The growth is contibuted by Maxis' Opera Mini Ad. Though even without that, SEA is having a nice decent increase of Opera user base.

While it's great that Maxis tries to increase public awareness through TV ads, many ordinary users would have stop using mobile internet the next month after receiving their bills.
